stupid things in the world

why do people insist on claiming that men and women are so different? feh. anyway, i took the empathy quiz on this site just now. women supposedly average 47 points, men 42, and people with asperger syndrome get 20 points. my score? 25 points. seriously, though, take the dang test. i have social anxiety problems! that somehow makes me fall between men and (genderless?) people with asperger syndrome. i didn't take the systemetising quotient test yet, so who's to say what "kind" of brain i have.

UPDATE: just so you know, jon scored a 9 on the empathy quiz. a 9. well below asberger level.

also, i finally took the systematizing part of the quiz. i got a pretty average score, but my low empathy has put me in the male brain camp. pretty sure i'm female, though.

i'm a male and i got a 55.

I only got a 38. Apparently we're social misfits who don't know how to act. I think I've gotten worse since I got to Utah, since I have no interactions in which to practice my skills.

Also, I am horrible at predicting how people will act. I'm always shocked when a person is suddenly mean to me or a guy I thought liked me turns out to be a lying piece of crap. I have almost no ability to tell when a person is saying one thing but really feeling another.

I got a 38 on the other one, too.

these are the stupidest questions I've ever seen. "Oh, men are more interested in machines! Women's can't read maps!"

Ick.

i think all it determined for me was the size of my ego.
Blogger Henry, at 11:39 AM
God, I hate this kind of crap. I haven't taken the tests yet because my internet connection is too slow, but I'll do it in an internet cafe later. I predict that I come out about the same on empathy and systemetizing... unless my empathy is so off the charts that my "masculine" brain could never match it. I do cry about other people's suffering way more than I think is normal. Then again, I am awesome at logic puzzles and reading maps and assembling stuff. I could be a super-man-woman-hybrid!!!

I will report my (probably pathetically low) scores later.
Blogger AK, at 12:04 PM
i got a 21 on the systemetizing, which is pretty darn low... okay, who in the world does this... ?!

"when i look at a mountain i think about how precisely it was formed."

please.

i used firefox when i did it at home, but it isn't working at all on my school compy. maybe you don't have the right crap downloaded to support it?
Blogger dorotha, at 3:32 PM
i found it when i was googling stuff on brain differences in men and women for class. yeah, i think i am going to use it.
Blogger dorotha, at 4:20 PM
You realize this is perfect to use in your gender class when you talk about psychological theories and the femininity/masculinity scales, right? We're SO doing this in class tomorrow!

It did fine on firefox for me.

I think this tests how emphatic you think you are rather than whether you really are. I got 37. Yay, I'm an insensitive bastard! It is so easy to give the "right" answers...
Blogger TDEC, at 8:11 AM
yeah, it is ridiculously easy to figure out the "right" answers. i think this test is total bunk. it is annoying that it is all "science-y" looking and done by some PhD or MD (i forget which), but has this crappy instrument to measure these things.

it is a great teaching tool, though.

tdec- at least you scored higher than me! i'm almost clinically bastardish!
Blogger dorotha, at 8:15 AM
Yeah. And you really don't like fluffy kittens.

But you're right, great way to make a point as a teacher. Disappointing from the Guardian though.

many women might just be taught that they are supposed to be good at caring and noticing people's feelings, and so they think this about themselves and answer accordingly on stupid tests. they might also be taught that they aren't supposed to be good at maps and numbers, so they think that way about themselves too and it's reflected in the scores. men are the same too, 'cept in reverse. it's complete bulunky. i personally think i'm good at being sensitive to people's feelings but truthfully, i'm usually wrong in my assumptions. i thought dorotha hated my guts when she first met me. apparently she didn't. anyway this test told me i was AN AMAZING EMPATH that can read people like open books. i should be the councelor on a federation starship! and date commander riker. whatevs.
Blogger Henry, at 12:08 PM
I thought Dorotha hated me when I first met her, too. She sort of looked at me like I was amazingly stupid and ran away from me.

She's a very hard girl to read.
Blogger Gwen, at 12:48 PM
gwen and hen - weren't you two paying attention? i practically have aspberger syndrome! that's why i am so hard to read!!!
Blogger dorotha, at 12:59 PM
Well the results are in. I had to do the stupid test on paper because I couldn't get the flash thing to work. But I am sadly average on both systematizing and empathizing. Slightly more systematizing, supposedly, so my brain is more "male" than "female." Or as Henry points out, I perceive myself that way.

The worst question on the SQ test: "When I read the newspaper, I am drawn to tables of information, such as football league scores or stock market indices." What??? Like only the sports and stock market pages have tables of information? How about mentioning a section related to an activity that women are NOT repeatedly denied access to...
Blogger AK, at 2:56 PM
I thought this test was crazy until you posted Jon's score.
Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:19 PM
I got a 45.
Then again, I like it when the moon is half full so maybe it makes sense.
Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:08 PM
On the empathy test.
It was kind of long though, so if you make students do these tests, maybe choose just one?
Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:09 PM
ak,
where are women denied access to the stock market or playing fields?
