we're almost happy, she's almost like you

jon emailed me today letting me know that he is a disertator. very good work for a mostly good boy!

i'm honestly very happy for him and am almost finding it difficult to feel sorry for myself. don't get my wrong, i'm still whiny and pathetic and way too into being whiny and pathetic. i just feel like i might normally hear this news and want to die. normally i would feel like a fuck up. i am super big on comparing myself to others and always finding myself wanting. today today i heard the news and felt good. i am not sure whether i am more proud of him for passing another hurdle in grad school or for expressing positive emotion about it, but no matter which way you slice it i am pleased or glad or something that is a slower, less ecstatic kind of happy. jon really is basically good. he may have been awful to date, but i do care for him and want to see him do well in life.

the picture is from the bathroom door of the karaoke kid. i swear it was not me who scratched the message into the door. i think i may have posted it before, but that doesn't make it any less appropriate.

humor, ar ar!

From my boy:

A sociologist, a physicist and a mathematician are each locked in a
prison cell and given a supply of canned food, but no can opener. After
thirty days, the cells are unlocked. The sociologist's cell has dents in
the walls, and smashed cans and food everywhere. He threw the cans at
the walls randomly until they burst open, and salvaged enough food to
survive. The physicist's cell wall is covered in calculations, and one
corner is heavily damaged. He calculated the optimum way to throw the
can at the wall to make it burst open reliably (to within a reasonable
margin of error), and he too survived. The mathematician's cell wall is
likewise covered in calculations, but there are no dents in the walls.
In fact, inside the cell sit the pile of cans, unopened, and the corpse
of the mathematician. He was able to derive a nonconstructive proof that
showed there was a way to throw the can of food at the wall, but could
not find the solution.

prelim on a bun*

get ready for me to put on some weight. the stress of various things (finding a job, thinking about epilepsy, etc.) is leading to some unnecessary eating. the biggest factor is probably the prelim. everytime i sit down to study, i almost immediately want to eat a pack of twizzlers and a grilled cheese sandwich. better yet, i wish i could eat a tiny triangle of my stomach over and over again, like in that one itchy and scratchy cartoon.

* when i was a novice talker, one of my favorite things to say to people was whatever they had just said to me, but with the addition of "on a bun!" if you offered me a dolly, i would have said, "dolly on a bun!" if you offered me a bun, i would have said, "bun on a bun!" you probably get the picture.
